The Alchemist's Color Codex
Liz Ives | Textile Artist
& Educator
Based in Central Massachusetts, I am a textile artist and educator dedicated to the beauty and history of fiber arts. My practice is built on a strong academic foundation: a BFA in Textile Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago, complemented by an MA in History (Material Culture focus) from Villanova University. As a textile arts teacher with 25 years of experience in all types of education, from college lectures to private mentorship, I believe firmly that anyone can do art if they have a desire to try.
I am currently offering small classes & workshops at New England Botanic Garden in natural dyes, embroidery, and other classes.
In my studio practice, I have been working with natural dyes for 25 years, ever since taking my first class "The Chemistry of Dyes and Fibers" at SAIC. I use the fabrics, embroidery thread, and eco prints produced in this practice for a variety of textile arts projects, including spinning, weaving, embroidery, felting, quilting and sewing.
I'm currently creating the tools (both web-based and physical) and writing the book designed to guide confident novice and intermediate dyers to the next level of their craft.
